For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.

I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past. And judging by the past, I wish to know what there has been in the conduct of the British ministry for the last ten years to justify those hopes with which gentlemen have been pleased to solace themselves and the House. Pragmatism

Winbreds would like you to believe that principles and morality is bad.

They are self-proclaimed “pragmatics”, which in Winbred words roughly translates to “do things without regard to its greater effect on the World”.

I support Free Software because it’s better for the World. If software engineers worked together instead of against each other, we wouldn’t have to reinvent the same wheels over and over.

Proprietary software has the idea that taking something that can be copied infinitely and artificially restricting it’s supply (artificial scarcity) is somehow a sensible idea. That we should invest millions to write software and impose it on our users, a software which serves no other purpose but make their software less useful and restrict their rights (DRM).

Instead of hiring thousands of engineers to make improve the state of technology, we must hire thousands of lawyers and sue each other ad infinitum in courts over vaguely worded software patents.

We are on the verge of a world without suffering and death. We already have the technology to distribute the sum of human knowledge to all humanity.

But Winbreds are busy coming up with more inventive ways to fuck over each other to care about any of that.

The right tool for the job, but nobody asks why the job exists in the first place.

It’s no matter. Winbreds are only interested on what is the optimal life configuration for pissing, shitting and fucking. Essentially, they think and act no different than an animal would and they build their life without any higher philosophy or purpose. That’s pragmatism.

Over the past month or so I decided to raid the cesspool called the TM Repository. The idea behind this evil website is basically give a middle finger to the true believers (I'm not kidding, that's the home page).

The Winbred terrorists of the site try to fight the GNU/Linux community's evangelism because they hate freedom. They want to hurt people putting the good fight against monopolistic proprietary software. They want to put an end to the strong righteous outrage good people like us have about the atrocities that are happening in the computer industry. They do this through a system of "trademarks", which try to categorize patterns they believe constitute the speech of the "freetards", a term they use to describe anyone who fights for the holy cause of freedom.

The site, like most of the Winbred community, is tiny and obscure. But I will not with good conscience allow such revolting and violent lies be spread about the glorious GNU/Linux operating system and her righteous community to go unanswered. So I created many pro-freedom TMs of my own, which despite being "downvoted" to oblivion, happened to be some of the most popular and controversial on the site. Let's look at all the job openings for Linux-related work. That's just one site! During a time of economic crisis, that doesn't seem bad at all.

They must be making peanuts though, right?

Windoze sysadmins do pretty well too, but their salary on average is lower:

Do similar comparisons between Linux Software Engineers and Mafia$oft Software Engineers, you'll find generally that people who use Linux make more money. And they save additional money in software and tools, by not giving away their money to criminal thugs like Mafia$oft.

Why Linux Is The Future

Obviously Linux runs on 95% of all supercomputers already, and is the #1 server OS in the world (and increasing their lead from Mafia$oft, who is literally giving Windoze Server away these days).

But the fastest growing segment in the computer industry is smartphones. Android is the #1 smartphone OS. HP WebOS has been able to generate a lot of buzz about that pretty recently as well. Meego is another smartphone OS from Intel and Nokia. How are these related? They all run Linux.

So sure, I'll readily admit monopolistic entity has a strong grip on desktops (which we will continue to fight them on). But the state of the industry is different. Smartphones and the Cloud are going to bring Linux to the mainstream in a way desktops could never do, even if Linux had 100% desktop marketshare.

It will be a long war to destroy the evil monopolistic entity from Redmond. But with the power of God and all that is good on our side, freedom will prevail. We are the future. We are Linux.

At least his predictions are consistent!

There is too so to say about this failure of this man. That's inherently subjective. I would say RoR has a better architecture.

The end result of this is cleaner code and faster development.

This has a lot to do with the fact that you can add a great deal of functionality to your website with very little code, because of how controller scaffolding can mold itself to your view and model in real time. Django and RoR arguably are part CMS and part web framework, since they come with such rich functionality already built in, you can just "declare" what you want your website to have and work from there.

ISG: The organization structure

This is a more challenging problem. One issue of any large organization is inefficiency and bureaucracy. How to completely eliminate it, I don't have an answer. But we can try to automate as much of the organization as possible.

This is just a simple overview. A real organizational structure is way out of the scope of a blog.

The primary unit of employment within the ISG should be a software engineer. The definition shall be broad: person whos day to day task must include at least some of the following: writing code, writing specs, handling bug reports, technical support, or managing other software engineers. Although, even managers may be required to write code from time to time.

This bureaucracy should be enforced by constitution. Eg: no less then 92.5% of employees shall be software engineers.

Other services will include HR, comptroller, and general administration.

There will be two types of projects:

Projects voted on by the public. Think Dell IdeaStorm. Every person gets one vote.

Projects voted on by developers. Similar to Dell IdeaStorm, but only ISG members can vote.

This provides a balance between "ivory tower" development and practical development.

Developers can pick what they want to work on, out of a limited list of "open projects" that appears based on the above votes and a public algorithm (codified in the above constitution). They then get a "contract" to work on the project.

Once part of a project, they develop. Easy enough.

Users can vote a project up, and this gets the developers merit pay based on how many people like the work they are doing. Very democratic. Developers can vote to expel other developers from a team: eg when a developer isn't doing shit. Also, the project manager has extra weight on this vote.

Something though that I feel should be explicitly in the constitution, the idea that the ultimate goal of the ISG is to create a general AI. Ultimately, I feel that is the major problem of computer science. This will be just a statement of intent.

Bring on the criticisms.

Funding the ISG: The BBC model

The BBC is the television equal of my idea. Let's see how we can use the BBC revenue model to fund the ISG.

The BBC gains it's revenue by a compulsory tax on every British household who owns a TV: £142.50 per year or roughly US $237.46.

Imagine thus in the developed world, such an equal tax was administrated for every computer owning household. In the USA, around 80% of households own a computer in 2008 [1]. Assuming that there is at as of 2000 census, 105,480,101 households, that means about 84.3 million own a computer. This adds up to $20,037,843,826 of revenue, and that's just from the USA.

We aren't counting businesses in this, which could be charged a separate tax. And this is just one country contributions: this should be international.

So I think we can fund this ISG idea without too much difficulty. $200 billion will pay for over 2.5 million employees assuming a $80,000 average compensation package, or 2 million assuming a $100,000 average. This is over 20-25x more people then Microsoft currently employs.

Speaking as a resident of the UK I like our ’socialist’ healthcare. It’s one of those things that a first world country simply should provide, alongside an Army, Police Force and Fire Service. Either they are all socialist or none of them are. I am not speaking from a ‘Socialism bad whaarrgarbbblll’ perspective here.

They can (and often are) also be provided by the private industry. This seems pretty arbitrary. Why should a first world country simply provide these services? Was it written on some stone tablets?

Because it doesn’t need to. The problem you have concocted this plan to solve does not exist outside your head. Medical bills can bankrupt even well off people through no fault of their own. Windows is cheap, it’s not going to destroy families as they need to buy Windows. Plus there are plenty of cheap offers for people if they look – Office for home users is significantly cheaper than for businesses.

This is untrue. In the USA private healthcare system, there is private healthcare insurance companies which offer comprehensive coverage, with their own medical care networks. No different in general as concept of the NHS, except privately run.

Here’s a great and revolutionary idea – people pay money for the software they want. That way you don’t make the poor even poorer subsidising the middle class and businesses demand for software – after all Microsoft already has socialist pricing for this very reason – you would make software more expensive.

Why not make education and healthcare private too? Again, your ideals are pretty arbitrary, and you don't provide back up. How would I make software more expensive?

There is one thing you didn’t think about in your proposal – Who says that the ‘ISG’s official OS is going to be Linux? Who says that the release license is going to be the GPL? As your example above it is better to all unite and work on one thing rather than work on multiple developer-starved projects. Which is obvious.

You are taking a concrete view on an abstract idea. They might use Linux, they might not.

Linux is legendary for it’s fragmentation though. The only thing that actually appears to only have one main version is the kernel itself, while for every other significant component there exist dozens of versions and forks. The FOSS movement has proved itself unable to form any sort of cohesive force, settle on any standards or even write a stable API/ABI. Software isn’t even compatible between distro versions, let alone cross distro compatible. There is a good chance anything written now will be broken in a years time by someone changing the API for something again. Compare this to Windows – or even BSD – where if you got some software made for Windows 95 there is a very good chance it’ll actually work on Windows 7. Yet the FOSS crowd haven’t even got a standard package format (tar.gz, deb, rpm, portage, etc, etc) yet whinge that MS has their own document format. Seriously, until the clusterfuck that is cross distro compatibility is fixed MS can have .doc and nobody has the right to say anything.

If in the very unlikely chance that the ‘ISG’ was actually created though I can bet you the OS base would not be Linux. It might be BSD but I reckon the most likely contender would be the company with the most advanced technology, hardware compatibility and capabilities to handle a project of this magnitude – which would be Microsoft. After all no country in the world would ever fund people who think that ‘Gimp’ is a good name for a piece of software. They would go with the most established, professional, capable and proven group – a list which Linux is at the bottom of.

This is just a standard hatertard anti-Linux rant. Not just that's it's absolutely wrong, it has no relevance to anything I said. This idea transcends stupid pro/anti OS debates. Stick to the ISG proposal next time buddy.

International Software Guild (ISG) - First draft

Note: This is a preview of an idea that I hope to make more concrete in the future.

Sometimes talking with the hatertards gets you some inspiration. The discussion was why open source is shit. Something I clearly disagree with, but I entertained the idea in order to get their rational. The answer: Money. Yes it's true, it's harder to make money on something that is given away for "free". Why do I put "free" in quotes? Because many countries have things that are very expensive and somehow are given away for "free". Thats because they fund it differently: though taxes.

The UK has "free healthcare" in that when you go to a doctor, you don't pay anything. Their services are financed by the government, through taxes.

In the USA, we pay more then double what most of the world spends on healthcare per capita, and yet we have shorter lifespans.

Universal healthcare is becoming a big topic in the USA these days, with our president strongly supporting healthcare reform that would lead to a government run healthcare program.

Why can't this extend to software? Well guess what. Yes we can.

Software is a purely capital expense. There is no problem reproducing something written in software. Why should dozens of ISVs exist that basically invent small variations of the same wheel? This is pointless.

To illustrate this point, consider this:

Take 100 programmers and product managers, divide them into 20, and put them each in their own room, and tell each group to write an office suite.

-or-

Take those same 100 people, and tell them to work together.

Which will result in a better product in the end? This is no contest.

Programmers should be working together, because software inherently a collaborative endeavor. That's why I propose an International Software Guild. This organization would hire millions of programmers internationally, pay them good wages and provide good benefits. They would work on thousands of different software projects, and all these software projects would be both free of charge and open source.

The International Software Guild would be financed as the same way education or healthcare is often financed - through taxes. Members would contribute a certain amount of their GDP to the program.

This ISG would have to be well financed. I would say at least $200 billion per year.

Since hatertards are basically the only people that visit this blog (who also happen to be wingnuts), I don't think I'll get a balanced response. I see this as the real way forward for the software industry. Just like education: software is really important for our future, and is universally useful for almost every human fields of endeavor.

Let us treat it that way.

What's interesting about this is something I didn't even expect, Ubuntu is competitive performence wise with Snow Leopard on Mac hardware. Keep in mind Ubuntu supports significantly more hardware then Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard is explicitly designed to work on Mac computers.

Decide to make a "really cool" application (pretend it's under NDA so you can't tell anyone), but it's really another CRM-type application. You are going to be as rich as Bill Gates from this! YAY!
Use every new fancy Microsoft technology: WPF, WCF, WWF, WTF, and other three letter acronyms you learned about in the last Code Camp. Make absolutely no good use of any of them.
Ask 1,000 questions on Stackoverflow. Always ensure to mention said fake NDA, but reveal enough information in your code snippets (WHICH YOU WISHED YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO SHARE - ZOMG EVIL OPEN SOURCES) that anyone with half a brain cell knows you are working on yet another CRM clone.
Spend some time on the site "helping" Linux users. Start every answer about Linux with the proposition: "In Visual Studio..."
Find out that WPF doesn't magically make you a good designer. Bust $3000 on .NET Controls.
Use a total of one control: Integrate a "Ribbon". That makes it look Microsofty!
Put at least 5 forms of copy protection on the software. Because like everyone totally will want to steal it.
Design a website (in Silverlight) with at least 35 buzzwords on the main page. Make sure it looks like crap, but includes a spinning logo in 3D (which you are very proud of!).
After about 10 months of wasted effort and a fuckton of spaghetti code, and not a single sale, give up.
Make a "iPhone DVD Ripper". Integrate GPL software illegally in it because that makes you badass.
Include lots of spyware in said application. No one buys software anyway.
Spam said iPhone DVD Ripper EVERYWHERE. SPAM SPAM SPAM. SPAM Stackoverflow too!
Fail anyway because everyone knows about Handbrake (EVIL OPEN SOURCE).
Give up.
Become a "database administrator" for an insurance company.
Kill yourself.

It's free: That means less money to spend on software, and more money you spend on video cards and CPU powar!! You can never have enough video cards and CPU powar!!!
Better performance: Many Linux gamers report better framerates under Linux then what they got under Windows. You can take apart the windowing system very easily in Linux, or even have a dedicated "gaming" GDM session with nothing loaded. That's hardcore d00d. You can't do that shit under Windows, unless maybe you install some obscure Codeplex app called WinXRipoff32. No wait, it probably doesn't actually work.
Bigger e-penis: Despite what the hatertards tell you, using Linux instantly makes you uberl33t. People (and especially women) will assume your penis is very long. This is just an extra perk of being a Linux user.
Tons of Linux games: Tux Racer! SuperTux! Just kidding :) There are many hardcore Linux games out there. Many of which are free.
You can play Windows games too: Wine supports DX9 and lower, with many hundreds (thousands?) of games well supported. Take a look at here for a list.
No CPU cycle eating, CD-ROM drive killing DRM: Well, thanks to Wine, any kernel level DRM shit that tends to come with games gets rendered completely useless.

Linux contributions are growing. Over 1000+ active contributors, up 10% from last year. Open source code is created at a super fast rate. Government funding begins to emerge. Google announces their first desktop OS.

You don't have to be the amazing kriskin to predict proprietary software's future. The truth is: it has no future.

Make it yours. You can change almost anything about your Linux desktop. It's almost hard to take a picture of what a Linux desktop even looks like, because everyone can make it their own. No other system comes close.
Community. There are millions of people on the Internet that will help you learn Linux, for free. Some of the best community you will ever find. Sure beats calling India every time you have a problem.
